Manny Rodriguez returned to Guadalcanal fifty years after the war, a small box in his hands. Inside was his best friend's dog tag, lost in the jungle when the Japanese attacked.

His friend Tommy had died in his arms, whispering, "Tell my mom I love her."

Manny had told her. Now he kept the other promise—to return, to find the place, to say goodbye.

He knelt in a small clearing, placing the dog tag on the ground. He said a prayer, saluted, and walked away.

"Rest easy, Tommy. I kept my promise."

The surf answered, waves washing away fifty years of silence.
